My Mum is an inspiration to me and so many others, and so I wanted to share with you her story…
Weight has always been an ongoing battle for her, but after applying to study Midwifery at University she decided to make a change. She joined a slimming class followed by regular exercise at the gym and fitness classes too – within a few years she had lost an amazing 9 stone!
Over the next 15 years her weight gradually increased and upon retirement she had regained 3 stone. Diagnosed with late onset Asthma and Osteopenia, she wanted to better her life by introducing a healthier lifestyle to improve her exercise intolerance and strengthen her bones.
Since retirement she turned to walking approx. 3 – 4 miles per day. This form of exercise was free and could fit around her lifestyle (with the added benefit of the company of my dog Buddy, who was more than happy to join her!) Finding new walking routes and enjoying the nature around our hometown, it wasn’t a chore at all. She felt happier, healthier and fitter! In turn her weight began to decrease and she noticed her figure becoming more toned. In no time at all she had lost the 3 stone and a little bit more!
With a BMI of under 25 my mum feels great and she continues to walk 20-25 miles per week. Family members and her friends often join her (not forgetting Buddy of course!) where we can all catch up and get a blether whilst enjoying nature and the fresh air. Recognising that her exercise tolerance had improved my mum plucked up the courage to attempt Goat Fell last year and she succeeded! We were all so proud. Never failing to amaze us she went on to climb Ben Lomond this year!
Who knows what is next for my inspirational Mum?
